It is universal knowledge that every computer needs to defragment if you want to keep its high performance. However, in the process of defragmentation, there appear many problems. So, in this article, I would like to share my understandings of defragmentation with you in hope that it can help you solve such problems.

Normally, the system can not defragment disks when starting computer. But, in fact, such function is prohibited by the computer. That is to say, you can enable the function manually.
When starting computer, if Windows XP can perform defragmentation to arrange the necessary files orderly, it is definitely that the starting speed can be improved greatly. Although such function is closed down in the default circumstance, you can activate it by following the steps:
Click “Start”—“Run”, type “regedit” to enter into “Registry Editor”, and click in order to find HKEY_LOCAL_MAHCINE\SOFTWARE\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunetion. In the right blanket, double-click the value of Enable and change the default key value from “N” to “Y”. Then, your system can defragment even it is starting.

Some people may wonder that can the starting speed be improved if forbidding pre-reading function. The answer is “Yes”.
You can also change your registry. In the “Registry Editor”, open the catalog of “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters” in turns, find the subkeys of “EnablePrefeteher”, and add the value of “1” to it. By doing this, you can lessen the waiting time of pre-reading files. It is much easier to enter into loading menu because the schedule bar just needs to scroll a circle.

But, I think you should learn that although you have set the value of “EnablePrefetcher” to “1” to facilitate pre-reading files, the system still has to load a bunch of drive programs, start subsystems and related services. In other word, even you have seen the welcome screen, it does not mean the computer has completed starting process. Does it sound contrary? Well, since the system has to continue to initialize the loading of drive programs, the total time cost in starting the system does not change greatly.

Therefore, it is still hard to speed up start computer by changing certain key values. But, do not worry, you can turn to another useful tools instead of doing it manually.

Key words: starting speed, start speed, defragmentation, defragment
